I just want to show the variation of flowers that can come out cultivars from the same grex.

Phalaenopsis Mei Ling Melendez = Phal ( Bamboo Baby x I-Hsin Sunflower ).

At the Sociedad de Orquidistas del Este 2007 Show, the requisite number of flowered plants of this grex was presented as a group for consideration for the Award of Quality . The AQ was granted.

Ps: The empty pot held one of the individual plants of the group that was awarded and that was having its offical award photo taken at the time when my friend Irma took the picture.


Three plants from the group were awarded at the show ( A miniumum of one has to be awarded for the group to be given the AQ).

They were :

'Monchito' AM/AOS




'Carlos' HCC/AOS




'Luis Rivero' HCC/AOS




If memory doesnt fail me I posted the one that was awarded at the 2008 PROS Show. But, just in case:

This one got an AM/AOS

The originator of the Cross was Coqui Nurseries of Puerto Rico and the Exhibitor of all the awarded plants was Mr Rafael Rodríguez.

Very impressive! AQs are a very tough award to get. It's interesting that Bamboo Baby is still a useful breeder. Do you know the cultivar names of the parent plants?

I know that the Bamboo Baby parent was the result of a selfing of Bamboo Baby 'Coquí' FCC/AOS but, I will check with the breeder for the exact clonal name. (He is out of reach till Monday Selling plants at a fair).

In an ironic twist of fate, the exhibitor bought one or two compots from the breeder and till recently has been the only person to have bloomed plants from the grex ( That man has such perfect Phalaenopsis growing weather , his Phals' growth rate out of compots is obscene) Not that I am jealous or soemething like that.

PS: This is the second AQ granted to progeny of Phal Bamboo Baby. The first one was to Phalaenopsis Francis Melendez about an eon or two ago .

Two more were awarded last May 1st. I will post the pictures of the awarded cultivars ( Along with those of the two other Phalaenopsis that were awarded) as soon as they are sent to me. The last Spring Show in Puerto Rico was a good one for Phalaenopsis : of the seven awards granted to plants ( the eight was granted to a grower ) , four were granted to Phalaenopsis.
