I got a Phalaenopsis mannii 'Zartbitter' recently to replace one which didn't like my growing conditions.

I've been trying to find good information on how to care for it, since it seems to need more than my other orchids. The only real thing I've found is that it likes to be a bit on the dry side, especially during winter?

For now, I put it in sphagnum. (I know, I know... but I didn't have any bark at all left at home, I'll have to go buy some).

I just wanted to ask if anyone here has been growing these successfully and can share their advice and knowledge in how to make the best environment indoors as possible for the mannii.

Well... what I've been able to find on my own is this:

Dry period for phal mannii?
mannii black
How dry is dry for phal mannii (On orchidboard)

So what I've been able to piece together is...

Warm temps, or it might drop its leaves. Can be watered frequently IF allowed to dry quickly, since it doesn't like to keep the roots wet for long. According to orchidspecies.com it likes shady areas with high humidity, and a dry period/winter rest to initiate blooming in spring.

I have no possibility to water it daily and grow it mounted. So maybe in a large pot with huge chunks of bark, and a thin layer of sphagnum on top to keep the moisture for at least a couple of days. Might work?

How are people here growing their mannii?

Phal mannii

ORIGIN/HABITAT: India and Vietnam at 1500 ft. (457 m). It usually grows near forest streams or marshes which, together with dense undergrowth, result in high humidity year-round, despite dry conditions in adjacent areas. The plants grow 10-15 ft. (3-5 m) above the very dark forest floor on rough-barked trees. -- Source: Charles Baker

I did not find Phal mannii to be more difficult than other species like Phal cornu-cervi. It's a good general rule to keep phal species a little bit on the dry side. By this I mean let the media almost dry out completely between watering. This is particularly important in the winter. Media shouldn't stay wet for days. And if it's to have dry period due to cooler temperature, you still want to maintain a humid environment year round.

Thanks for the info, Peter.

Maybe I was just a bit unlucky with my first one, or I drenched it too much.
