We had a discussion of what to do with phalaenopsis with terminal spike. In other words, a inflorescence growing from the center (aka crown) of the plant. In my experience, it is not the end of the world when a plant produced a terminal spike. I was going to take these pictures for Lauren who asked about her phal with terminal spike.

Here is an example of a yellow phalaenopsis - specifically Phal. Taisuco Glory with terminal spike. This was last year.

I let the spike finished flowering (photo with dried up inflorescence).

It was a pleasant surprise that this plant has produced 2 basal keiki each has produced 2 spikes.

I was led to believe that this is a genetic error, and terminal is a very apt description. I'm hoping it's merely a replication error, rather than being representative of the genotype, in which case the keikis will develop it, too. Since it can't grow at the terminus, it will very likely die, if it hasn't already. The plantlets may support it, but this is not a good plant to breed with, as I believe it (the defect) can be passed on to the next generation.

Really the person to talk to about this is Ned Nash, whose advice I am passing along. He would know far more about it than I do.
