Does anyone have suggestions for a good mix for oncidiums and the related intergenerics? My phals are doing well in orchiata (except the violaceas and violacea hybrids that are in sphagnum) but am not sure if orchiata is the best choice for the oncidiums.

I would think that orchiata would be dry for oncidiums. If I used it, I'd be adding something to make it hold more mosituer. I would mix half orchiata and half rexus bark and then put a little chunck peat and something to still hold additional moistuer.

I think this is a case of what's great for one might be horrible for another.

Considering the different grades of Orchiata available, I would think it would be relatively easy to select a somewhat finer one for your oncidiums. Let us not forget that your watering habits and growing conditions play as big a role in media selection as the plant itself does.

If you have an issue with Orchiata drying to fast, sty pouring (not soaking) boiling water on it before using it.

And sorry Bob, but I think mixing Orchiata with Rexius would be a mistake, as the Rexius is going to "go south" much sooner, then you'll have to dump the whole pot at once.

Thanks for the suggestions. Perhaps I'll try small orchiata and LECA.
