Is this a necessary thing to do? I have had these plants in the same basket now since 2012, and they don't seem to have any problems.  They are in a rather small basket, so it drys out quickly in about 1-2 days. The root growth is good, and the plants put roots down in to the media still and all over the place.  The stuartianas and phillipinensis forgot they were phals and send their roots out like a vanda!

When I potted them, I used some bark, and sphagnum on the outside, and others that seemed like they wanted more moisture I used all sphagnum.

Anyways, just not sure if this is something I can leave indefinitely? I did dig some bark out of one last year to see what it looked like, and even though it was dark and aged, it didnt seem to be decomposed like it would have in a pot. I try not to think much about it since they are doing well, but at some point probably have to do something. Could one just place in to a larger basket??

Here are some pics:

All in all, not to shabby for growing inside a house in Wisconsin window.
