When I see some of these crosses, the lateral sepals appear to have a larger angle than the of the dorsal and lateral. Is it an illusion? If it's not an equilateral triangle, does it count against in this type of breeding when being judged for quality awards?

The markings look so distinct and crisp. If it had the shape of either parent, I feel like it would be phenomenal.

I think I understand what you are asking. If it's an equilateral triangle then you can draw a circle that shows a rounder flower. For AOS judging yes rounder will get more points for award consideration.
Making this hybrid I realize the risk that the shape will be more open due to Phal fasciata influence. I had hope that Phal Yungho Gelb Canary hybrid will maintain its good form. Alas it's not in the first bloom (which is too small and not grown to its potential yet)

FWIW, flower shape of this first bloom will change. It's not going to get fuller much, but the overall triangular shape may be different. I've observed this from flower to flower on the same plant.

Generally AOS award is usually not given to one or two flowers. For phals you usually need to have more flowers open to be considered fairly.

Personally I don't think one flower should score higher than 80 points It may get a HCC for exceptional color, form, or size. But we need to see more flowers on a large plant before scoring it higher than HCC

I've read the fasciata breeding issues referenced here and don't exactly understand the totality of it. Thank you for helping me understand it a but more though , I appreciate the explanations. I love thinking about breeding and imagining the outcomes of crosses.
