F2915 Phal Pylo's Dragon Fantasy
(Giant Passion 'OK' X Dragon Tree Eagle 'DT#1' AM/AOS)

Image

This is a smaller plant. While color is very good and bud count (4 or 5 buds) is great for a first bloom small seedling, I can't help but wondering what happen to Phal gigantea. This cultivar of Phal Giant Passion looks more Phal Hannover Passion than ther cultivar.

You can see very faint/shadow of concentric barring from Phal Hannover Passion in this flower.

DTE is very dominate in this flower. I have another larger plant with 12 inch leaf span that should have bloomed but won't. We will see if that one looks more like Phal gigantea.

I'm disappointed that the gigantea seems to be missing, but it is still a nice flower.

Thank you Jarad. Will try to remake this. Like the flower count so far for a small first bloom plant.

My DTE is in bloom if yours isn't. My Giant Passion has long since faded though. I can send you pollen. :D

Has anyone ever counted DTE 'DT#1'? You've done multiple crosses with this Peter and all of them heavily resemble DTE. It almost makes me think 'DT#1' is somehow tetraploid.

DTE is 2n. Because we have many of its progeny that will breed as pollen parent. It cannot be 4n because its progeny would be 3n and couldn't be used as pollen parent.

There are many 2n parent species or hybrid that are very dominate. This is what makes them a good breeder if they have traits that a breeder is looking for.

DTE has great color substance and flower form for the type breeding. As we see many DTE hybrid. We will be selecting the few that looks different.

Cody, I think what your noticing is the color pattern that comes from bellina. It's very dominant in crosses and easily passes on from generation to generation. It's great if that's what your going for. In a diploid cross you basically have a 50/50 chance of that getting passed on. It would actually be more likely to see that pattern start to drop out in a tetraploid cross.

Agreed, that's exactly what I was talking about. I just never would have thought it could be that dominant. And I was also unsure if DTE had any progeny that had been bred with.

This is one of my highly anticipated hybrid years before. To give you an idea the hybrid flasks were available in 2011.

Couple days ago I found another plant in bloom. It wasn't in good shape - in need of repot. Flowers are alright, no real surprise of something really different. Hybridizing is tricky. As a hybridizer I tend to make flowers that I'm partial to. Saying this is after the fact - years later after hybrid have bloomed. Is it possible to get a really nice flower from this hybrid? Sure - but how many do I need to bloom out to have one flower that is different and have best traits from both parents?

Knowing what I know today - that DTE is a dominate parent. Both parents have Phal Hannover Passion as a parent - so it makes sense to have flowers more or less leaning towards the look of Phal Hannover Passion.

A note to myself, I couldn't find this registration in Orchidwiz. I thought I registered this ? What happened ?

Update - I found my registration here, date of registration - 06/07/2015
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticulturaldat ... ?ID=985233

But Orchidwiz doesn't have this registration, and my copy is updated Dec 2016.
I better write orchidwiz support.

I'm finding other errors like Phal Mituo Princess shows up as Phalaenopsis Mituo Princess (Phalaenopsis LD Double Dragon X Unkn. unknown)
