I will use this topic to keep tracking of my Tying Shin Big-Foot hybrid.

TS2872 (Tying Shin Red Emperor X Tying Shin Black Angel)

I'm pleased with this. First bloom on a young plant. A seedling from the flask I got last year from Tying Shin Orchids.

TS2907 Phal ((Tying Shin Energy-(Chian Xen Pearl-Zuma’s Pixie)) X Tying Shin World Class)

Harlequin - no big lip
Image

Big lip - not harlequin - but very nice overlapping petals.

TS2875 Phal (Tying Shin Golden Staff X Fureshing Acclaim)

This is probably my favorite big foot hybrid because I'm getting several seedlings producing larger lip. Here is one of them that has been in flower since March.

TS2875 No.5

Wow I didn't realize how variable these crosses are, not referring to the big lips. Must be kinda fun growing these out and seeing what luck brings you.

Are these generally big lip x big lip?

I have obtained three flasks from Peter, some of the seedlings have already bloomed on very small plants. Variable is an understatement! The purchase of a flask of these big lips are as close to gambling as I get. It is always interesting to see flask seedlings bloom for the first time.

Yes, breeders are now working with F2 or F3 big foot hybrids. The history of big foot is Phal World Class 'Big Foot' JC/AOS (Mae Hitch X Kathy Sagaert), originated from Carmela Orchids. I bought mine plant in 1997. I still have a small plant of it.

In 2007 Krull-Smith registered Phal Krull's Butterfly - it got 12 awards, including AQ/AOS.

Brother Orchids visited Carmela Orchids and brought Phal World Class 'Big Foot' JC/AOS. Mr Lin at Brother Orchids shared pollen of Phal World Class 'Big Foot' with Yu-Pin Orchids. In 2009 Phal Yu Pin Easter Island was registered, a cross between a large white Phal Sogo Yukidian x World Class. There are 10 awards

In 2010 Yu-Pin registered Phal. Yu Pin Fireworks (Phal. Sogo Dove X Phal. World Class) with 7 awards.

Awards get attention to other hybridizers. So since other breeders are breeding with Big Foot type. The progeny is very diverse. You can get regular type as well as large lip progeny. Breeders like Tying Shin Orchids use harelquin flowers and created an array of color. When I was in Taiwan last week, we are seeing yellow and orange color big foot.

Alas new plants are slow to introduce to US market. This is likely because florists, consumers (whether hotels, wedding planner) are generally happy with big white, pink. We see the same varieties for years. There are little motivation for large growers to introduce new varieties.

As a collector, my only viable option is to buy flasks. I cannot afford premium price on top choice plants. These are usually acquired by breeder or large plant producer who paid premium on one plant - which will be turned into millions of clones.

That's really interesting, and a cool story of how this line of breeding started. I was in the Netherlands a few months ago and I would say half the phals on display at the 'florist shops' there are big lip types. Perhaps consumers there are trendier than the ones here, but it's more likely that it'll take a bit more time before there are enough clones for the market.

This may be of interest for people who want to know more about the genetics of this phenomenon. A paper just came out this week describing the genes that are involved in turning lips into petals, and they include an artificially induced big lip phal, so it may be relevant here. Here are the links to the news/views article and the actual article.

Wow, TS2875 is amazing. I love the markings, especially on the lip.

Good growing on that white Peter. I prefer calling these hybrids "big lip", here in the Pacific Northwest big foot means something entirely different.

The trend here in the USA is starting to go to the big lip hybrids. It is not unusual to see the big lip hybrids in the big box stores. I trend that I applaud!
