Phal Pylo's Sofia
(Sogo Lawrence 'Nobby' X (Chingruey Fancy x lueddemanniana) 'Edward')

Named after Edward's daughter Sofia. Pollen parent was sold to Edward. I used the pollen to see if it is breedable in 2012. And here we are. We have many seedlings to bloom.

First bloom from this hybrid on 2015 December

Update on this hybrid. I have bloomed about 5 of these already. Some I can see heavy influence from Phal Sogo Lawrence. As expected Phal lueddemanniana has a big influence too. The real test is to use this as pollen parent. The fact that Phal (Chingruey Fancy x lueddemanniana) breeds as pollen parent tells me the Phal lueddemanniana used is 4n. So this should be a 4n hybrid. That said, 4n crosses are not always easy to make when pairing hybrid between different sections within the genus.

Overall I'm pleased with the fragrance and size of theses flowers. The only downsize is slight reflex from Phal lueddemanniana - even though parents used don't have this trait. Reflex is an undesirable trait since hybridzing with Phal Brother Purple 'Brother' - which is a progeny of Phal Paifang's Queen (Mount Kaala x lueddemanniana) large white x lueddemanniana.

Here is one of the newer seedling. Flower is large 6.5 cm and fragrant.

Still waiting to bloom one that has the shiny texture of pollen parent and flat flower.

CRF is an interesting parent. On the plus side it gives larger blooms, fragrance and longer spikes. Some of the progeny have 2 spikes at a time too, but I'm not exactly sure where that comes from. On the negative side blooms are generally reflexed and max 4 per spike. ( comments per my experience thus far )

The fragrance came from the other parent. If you are referring to Phal TQ's Tracey (Cross is Chingruey's Fancy x K S Happy Eagle), fragrance is from KS Happy Eagle.

Phal Chingruey's Fancy has Phal Paifang's Queen in the background. Its progeny tend to have reflex petals.

My KS* isn't fragrant at all. I realise genetics is complicated. I have another hybrid with CRF as pod parent, will have to see what happens there.

* its in bud again so will double-check when it blooms.

If you lookup species in KS happy eagle, just about all of them are scented except micholitzii.

This is such a good cross - I really hope some of them (hopefully one of the ones I bought) will end up with that lueddemanniana glossiness! :D

This is shared with us from Jane in Texas. She got this December 2015
She said
Quote:
It just bloomed this morning, unfortunately we have a cloudy day today. It only has a faint vegetative fragrance so far. I should be able to tell in a couple days.
